What Is the Beginner Certification Course?

The Beginner Certification Course is a comprehensive 8-month, structured program that gradually immerses you in the world of Oriental dance and music. This course is thoughtfully divided into three progressive modules:
  • Level 1 — 2 months: Focuses on foundational techniques and body awareness, perfect for those with no prior dance experience.
  • Level 2 — 3 months: Builds on the basics with drills, combinations and musicality.
  • Level 3 — 3 months: Deepens your understanding of technique, style, and creative expression, preparing you to complete the beginner journey and confidently step into intermediate levels.
Across all modules, you’ll receive technical training, creative choreography, and theory classes that explore Middle Eastern rhythm, culture and the history behind this art form.

Who Teaches The Course?

Nrityakosh’s beginner certification course, introduced in 2021, was thoughtfully structured by our director, Debapriya Das, to provide a clear and educational journey for students who want to develop both skill and understanding in belly dance.
At the heart of your learning are experienced instructors who care deeply about technique, progression, and personal growth:

Dinesh Digal

Dinesh is a senior dancer & instructor with training in Middle Eastern classical styles, Odissi, jazz, and contemporary dance. Dinesh spent more than half a decade training under these styles before he felt ready to move into the role of a full-time dancer and teacher. “I now share the tremendous joy that dance brings me to a community we are building here.  Learning excites me, and sharing that process with others is a responsibility I take great pride in,” he says.
Dinesh performs a Raqs Sharqi piece for our showcase in 2023.

Dinesh’s students believe his fun, light-hearted yet passionate approach to teaching dance is why they look forward to his classes.  Dinesh joined Nrityakosh as an advance dancer in 2022. Within few months, he was inducted as a company dancer, and he became an instructor for Nrityakosh in 2023.  He takes the Certification course in Koramangala and HSR locations.

Madhu S Rao

Madhu is a senior dancer & instructor who is trained in Middle Eastern classical styles, fusion styles, contemporary dance and basic ballet.  She is also a certified yoga coach, and fitness is a strong component of her classes. “I believe the human body is built to move. It's our natural state of being,” she says. As a teacher and yoga coach, Madhu is passionate about deepening the mind-body connection in our current lifestyle that often favours disconnect.

Madhu performs for a hafla in 2022.

Her students love her for her cool-headed, fun approach and intelligent guidance. Madhu takes the beginner certification course in our Koramangala centre, and takes open-level classes in JP Nagar and New Bel Road.

Rituparna Roy Chowdhury

Rituparna is a senior dancer & instructor with a strong foundation in both belly dance and Indian classical form (Bharatanatyam).  “I was put into a dance class when I was in kindergarten” she reminisces. “Dance gave me stability.”

Teaching for her is a way of giving back to the belly dance community. “I found my community through belly dance - and as a teacher now for a growing school, it is important to build people around me.”
Rituparna’s students love her for her detail-oriented, crisp and clear approach.  They love her intense investment in their personal journey with dance - ensuring that the foundation of a technique or concept is well-absorbed.
Rituparna performs an Indian Fusion piece for a showcase in 2022.

Rituparna began her journey with Nrityakosh as an intermediate-advance dancer in 2018. She soon became a company dancer and progressed to being a company instructor in 2022. Rituparna takes classes the Beginner certification course in our Ejipura centre and takes open-level classes in Electronic City.

While the course structure and content remain the same, each instructor brings unique strengths and teaching styles to the class.  Around 20 beginner certification batches have been completed successfully since 2021.

Why Choose the Nrityakosh Beginner Course?

We’ve designed this course to maximize your learning, your confidence, and your experience, and we take into account the varied goals that students have when they sign up for a belly dance class. The goal may be - “I want to have fun!” or “I want to take this up as a profession” - our class structures are cognizant of both of these goals.

“My biggest takeaway from this course was the amount of body awareness I gained from it. We were taught about how, anatomically, how movements can be isolated in different body parts - which was very interesting to me. It also made me feel a sense of empowerment - that I could move in this different way,” says Alar Arvind, who completed her beginner journey with us last year, 2025.

Community Comes First

Belly dance at Nrityakosh isn’t just a class — it’s a community. You’ll train alongside supportive peers, celebrate progress together, and perform in group showcases and haflas throughout the year.

Says Moupriya Ray, who completed her beginner journey in 2022, “To me, Nrityakosh is a way of life -Trainers who are not only charismatic dancers but also torchbearers of right outlook in life. Peers who are just fellow artists who share the same passion for this art form, irrespective of gender, color and body size. Everyone here finds their happy space in no time - the spacious studios enable you to let loose, make mistakes, learn and grow .Nobody judges here, yet they effortlessly teach you to be your own judge.”

Moupriya is now an advance student. Alar agrees, “Dance brings people together - and the course itself gave me a nice community feeling. I made some really nice friends during the course, people who share similar interests.”

Structured + Supportive Learning

At Nrityakosh, classes are systematic and paced, ensuring strong technique first, then combinations and choreography. This method builds confidence and reduces overwhelm, a common challenge for new learners in many studios.

“Most people who drop in to the first class start to discover that there is more to belly dance than they thought - and you can see them realising this, layer by layer, as they go through all levels of this course,” says our instructor Madhu Rao. “By end of Level 1, students discover there is more to foundational movement than just using their hips.  By Level 2, they are introduced to Middle Eastern rhythms, and they start developing a ear for the music that comes from the culture. It is so lovely to watch them fall in love with it! By end of Level 3, students discover that they have barely touched the tip of the iceberg - there is so much more to learn!”

Cultural & Theoretical Depth

Beyond movement, you’ll learn about rhythms, music, cultural context, and performance practice,  things that make your dance rooted in knowledge, therefore giving you greater confidence.

Performance Opportunities

At Nrityakosh, we believe performance is a technique that needs refinement and practice of its own. For this reason, we have a separate beginner showcase for our beginner students, which enables our beginners to own the stage and have fun. We decided to have a separate show for beginners two years ago.
Our beginners, led by Dinesh Digal, perform a piece for the beginner showcase in October.
“What was really nice was that there is a good balance of class training as well as presenting your work onstage,” says Alar. Alar will be moving into the Intermediate batch this year.

Theory Classes: More Than Just Practice

A key differentiator of this course is the integration of theory into your learning. You won’t just do moves — you’ll understand the:
  • rhythmic structures
  • musical phrasing
  • historical context
  • cultural meaning
This helps ground your dance in both intellectual appreciation and physical precision, a combination many beginners find empowering. Our director, Debapriya Das, takes these theory classes for our beginners.

What Happens After 8 Months?

Once you’ve completed all three levels, you’ll receive your Certification at a warm, celebratory graduation ceremony — and unlock eligibility for Intermediate classes that take your skills further.

Many students find that what began as curiosity becomes a lifelong passion, whether for performance, continued study, or personal artistic expression. “What I really find fascinating about a student journey is witnessing how they all show up for themselves -  their discipline and commitment to themselves. Their reasons for showing up could be many - mental well-being, physical well-being - but how do they take it forward? It is always interesting for me as a teacher to watch that journey unfold,” says Madhu.
