NRITYAKOSH | The RaS Project - Collection of Stories From Ramayana | Trailer

The RaS project is belly dance recital which presented a collection of stories from Ramayana. It explored the emotions of various female characters who was present - peripherally or otherwise- in the text. It chooses diverse perspectives of Sita, of Surpanakha, of Mandodari, the rakshasis of Lanka.. The production starts as a tale of love – the love that draws Ram and Sita together and ends as a tragedy – with Sita choosing to renounce the very same love as it drove Ram to question her spirit. As the production transformed, it explored the nature of Surpanakha’s lust, Mandodari’s grief and the up and downs of the lives of the Rakshasis in Lanka. The idea of RaS Project was to explore the concept of the Bhava- Rasa theory from the Natyashastra through the language of Egyptian Oriental and Tribal Fusion dance forms. That is, Dance, in its essence, is a medium through which the dancer expresses Bhaava, or the emotion which possesses the dancer. Without Bhaava, dance is bare, cold, lifeless and indifferent. This emotion seeps through the performance into the audience, making them go through similar feelings as the dancer. This corresponding emotion experienced by the audience is Rasa – an intimate connection between the dancer and the audience, or rasikas. While this was a concept already explored in Abyad Kale with abstract emotions, the RaS Project hoped to attach the exploration of emotions to a coherent narrative. The RaS project was staged on April 1, 2017 at Rangasthala auditorium. Nrityakosh is a performance house and a school for belly dancers and belly dance enthusiasts. We specialize in the Egyptian Oriental and Tribal Fusion forms of Belly Dance along with Kathak, Contemporary and Bollywood dance. STUDENT CORNER

Nrityakosh stands out when compared to other belly dance schools in Bangalore in many ways. Firstly its structured module based intensive trainings which help students to acquire the knowledge and training in a systematic approach. Secondly its productions, haflas and other projects that run through out the academic year which gives an opportunity to put the learning into good use. Most importantly the professional environment that Deba and her team of instructors provide. Classes are regularly conducted, no deviations , unplanned changes ,last minute cancellations etc. Lot of importance is given on learning the culture and history behind the art which makes it even more intriguing.

What do I wear to a belly dance class?

Anything comfortable that you would wear for a workout! We do ask that you wear track pants or tights as bottom wear so that the instructor can see the alignment of your legs.  Avoid jeans or skirts. If you want to carry a belly dance belt, we suggest a scarf, they work best.

Am I too old for belly dance?

No. Belly dance is a very welcoming dance form - your age does not matter.   Come with an open heart to a dance class and you will surprise yourself.

How often do we get to perform?

We provide our student many opportunities and platforms to perform - through our quarterly haflas, where the entire school gets together to present their learnings. We also run Performance Lab, where we try to nurture budding soloists. Then, of course, we have our annual shows.
